hdygg: homer's farm 2015

we finally made it to homer's farm saturday, but he wasn't there.  seems we missed him by a half hour.  oopsies!  i know he has new bees and chickens, but we'll have to wait till he's there to get the full tour on the new farm critters.  there wasn't much plantings to see quite yet, but i did spot some green tomatoes - yum!  you might think it was a wasted trip, but there is always something wonderful to see in nature if you look hard enough.  scroll to the bottom to see what exciting critters i found on this outing.  :)

do you see why i am in love with yellow rocket?  swoon!

maybe fried green tomatoes next week!

the bees were so very happy with the wildflowers growing in the as yet untilled land.

this beauty would not be still for my camera, but i am grateful to her nonetheless.  without her i never would have spotted . . .

this guy!  eeps!  another hummingbird moth!  my third lifetime sighting!

and then i chased this chubby butt around for a bit before leaving.  i have developed quite a thing for bumblebees as well.  this one had a different patterning than the usual suspects, so i wanted a photo for my collection.

joining with mamasaurus and "how does your garden grow?"

kindergarten journals

we all finally got tired of the my little pony worksheets, so i had to come up with a new activity to get us through the final nine weeks.  seeing as how my first grader likes to journal and the kindergarteners will be first graders soon . . . yea, no brainer.  let's journal!

a quick looksee in my craft room at home and i was set.  i found several sets of duplicate patterned paper in my stash.  each book is made from two sheets of 6x12 patterned paper and two sheets of 4.25x11 copy paper (both are just standard sized paper cut in half) that is folded in half and then stitched or stapled down the spine according to my laziness factor.  i also found some old labels in my stash for the covers.

we start each session with a fry word sentence that i've typed up and printed out.  we read it together and then they glue it in their journals and illustrate it.

next up each gets a little set of four or five tiny fry word flash cards.  we read those together as well and then they each pick one to use in a sentence.

sometimes i help them with spelling and sometimes not.  invented spelling is expected at this age.  when i don't help with spelling, i go in behind them and write the correct spelling under their sentences (see pinky pie example above).

and then, of course, they get a my little pony to color, cut, and paste.  they know what they like (sigh).

little red house in the springtime

this is the little red house i photographed the first of february for a black and white photography challenge.  it's amazing the difference two and a half months makes.  photographing the wildflower at my high school each month has inspired me to photograph this place through the four seasons.  welcome, spring!  i am loving all the green i saw and can't wait to see what summer holds.  it is a gorgeous piece of property.

me on monday

i woke up on monday with lovely lists all over my planner.  the school day went well (even without my beloved coke - i really need to lose the snow pounds) and i was anxious to get home and tackle the next item - spraying poison on the dandelions in my lawn (the irony of noah's garden coming in the mail friday was not lost on me.  i do love my weeds, but the sprightly dandelion flower needs to age a little more gracefully).  then it rained again and dampened my enthusiasm.  before i knew it i was nodding off at my computer screen.  i staggered into the living room and fell comatose on the sleepover mattress that was still on the floor from the weekend.  thus commenced my first nap of the year.  the cozy kitty was ecstatic.  g woke me in time for our mexican dinner date where i drank two glasses of my poison of choice and found enough energy to make it to boy scouts.  i even sprayed the lawn before my second wind petered out.  today's after school task is to mow down the dandelion remains.  coke required.
